Lenzing turns used geotextiles into garments to extend the lifecycle

Austrian cellulosic fiber producer Lenzing, in collaboration with its network of partners, has launched an innovative initiative aimed at repurposing used geotextiles into new textile fibers for garments, extending their lifecycle and promoting sustainability.

The initiative, titled "Glacial Threads: From Forests to Future Textiles," was unveiled at the Palais des Nations in Geneva during the International Day of Forests celebration. Geotextiles, originally designed to protect glaciers threatened by climate change, often utilize fossil-based fibers and have a short two-year lifecycle.

To address environmental concerns and prevent microplastic pollution, Lenzing has developed a sustainable, biodegradable alternative. By collaborating with partners such as Marchi & Fildi Spa, Candiani Denim, and Blue of a Kind, Lenzing aims to recycle geotextiles into new textile fibers, transforming them into stylish and eco-conscious garments.

The successful recycling of geotextiles in the pilot project has already led to the creation of innovative products like the glacier jacket. Verified by the University of Innsbruck and Austrian glacier lift operators, this initiative has expanded to other glaciers frequented by tourists across Austria in 2023.
