Inditex Commits €6.5 Million to Protect the Amazon Through Conservation International Partnership
Inditex has announced a €6.5 million commitment to Conservation International to support the protection and restoration of the Amazon rainforest between 2026 and 2028. The three-year partnership will help establish new protected areas and strengthen the management of existing conservation sites across Brazil, Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Suriname, contributing to the protection of more than two million hectares of rainforest.
The initiative also supports Indigenous communities, whose territories play a vital role in safeguarding the Amazon’s biodiversity and ecological integrity. The investment builds on Inditex’s broader nature strategy and follows its 2023 commitment to the Regenerative Fund for Nature, reinforcing the company’s efforts to advance biodiversity conservation and regenerative land management.
The announcement comes as scientists warn that the Amazon is approaching a critical ecological tipping point. Around 15% of the rainforest has already been lost, and researchers estimate that deforestation reaching 20–25% could trigger irreversible consequences for the global climate, biodiversity and regional water cycles.
Home to nearly 13% of the world’s known species and around one quarter of the planet’s freshwater resources, the Amazon also stores vast carbon reserves essential for climate regulation. Funded through proceeds from charges on paper shopping bags and envelopes introduced by Inditex in 2021, the partnership reflects a growing trend of fashion companies investing in large-scale, nature-based solutions that combine ecosystem restoration, climate resilience and community-led conservation as part of broader corporate sustainability strategies.
