YKK Develops Concept Zipper Made with Recycled Textile Nonwoven Fabric
Japanese fastener manufacturer YKK has unveiled a concept version of its EXCELLA zipper featuring zipper tape made from recycled nonwoven fabric sheets, marking the first application of this type of material for zipper tape. Developed in collaboration with fashion designer Yuima Nakazato and Seiko Epson, the concept uses fibres processed from used clothing and other textile materials, which were regenerated into nonwoven sheets through Epson’s Dry Fiber Technology.
The project aims to explore new pathways for recycling and upcycling post-consumer textiles amid growing concerns over global clothing waste. Because the nonwoven material has different properties from conventional zipper tape, the development team had to rethink attachment methods, slider selection and usability to accommodate its greater rigidity.
YKK said the insights gained from the project will support further development of EXCELLA zippers for the luxury market, building on its existing circular initiatives such as the NATULON Fiber Sourced zipper, which uses recycled polyester derived from textile waste and discarded garments.
