Burberry launches a scarf made from lab-grown Brewed Protein fibre

British luxury fashion brand Burberry has unveiled a groundbreaking new scarf crafted from Brewed Protein™ fibre, a next-generation, lab-grown material developed by Japanese biotech firm Spiber. This marks Burberry as the first luxury brand to introduce products using this innovative fibre, produced through the fermentation of plant-based, renewable ingredients.

The new scarf blends 62% wool, 8% cashmere, and 30% Brewed Protein™ fibre, offering an ultra-soft finish and maintaining Burberry's signature quality, warmth, and durability. Woven in Italy, the scarf features Burberry's iconic B shield motif, inspired by the brand’s heritage Equestrian Knight design, with twisted fringing.

Kazuhide Sekiyama, Director and Representative Executive Officer at Spiber Inc., highlighted the importance of this collaboration, stating, “The result of over 20 years of research and development, Brewed Protein™ fibre is a revolutionary material designed for the future. Our partnership with Burberry expands the use of this protein, contributing to a more circular society while showcasing the potential of the microorganisms that produce it.”

This release continues Burberry’s legacy of textile innovation, a tradition that began with founder Thomas Burberry’s invention of gabardine, a breathable and weather-resistant fabric that revolutionized outerwear. The brand remains committed to sustainability, not only through materials like Brewed Protein™ but also by exploring eco-friendly agricultural practices, such as hydroponic cotton cultivation, and working with innovative dyeing techniques that conserve water and energy.

The B shield scarf is now available in Burberry stores and online, showcasing the brand’s continued commitment to sustainability and craftsmanship.
