Amazon, Google, Meta and Microsoft Back New Fund to Accelerate Clean Data Center Innovation

A coalition of leading technology companies, including Amazon, Google, Meta and Microsoft, has joined forces with climate-focused nonprofit investor Elemental Impact to launch the Data Center Innovation Initiative (DCII), a new fund aimed at accelerating the deployment of clean energy and sustainable infrastructure technologies across the rapidly expanding data center sector.

The initiative will invest between $500,000 and $5 million in up to 10 startups through 2027, focusing on solutions that improve energy efficiency, reduce emissions and strengthen community resilience. Priority areas include energy storage, advanced electrical systems, industrial cooling technologies, and low-carbon construction materials. Selected projects will be tested in operational data centers and demonstration sites, providing emerging technologies with a pathway from pilot stage to commercial deployment.

The launch comes as the rapid growth of artificial intelligence drives unprecedented demand for data center capacity, increasing pressure on energy systems, water resources and construction materials. Through DCII, participating technology companies will help identify priority innovation areas, support project evaluation and share deployment learnings across the industry to accelerate adoption of proven solutions.

Beyond environmental performance, the initiative places a strong emphasis on community impact, including local stakeholder engagement, workforce development and infrastructure resilience. Organizers believe the program can help position data centers not only as major energy consumers, but also as catalysts for clean technology deployment, supporting broader efforts to balance digital growth with climate goals and sustainable economic development.
