Cartier, the Power of Magic exhibition opens at Shanghai Museum
On November 4, 2024, the "Cartier, the Power of Magic" exhibition opened at the East Hall of the Shanghai Museum. Twenty years after successfully hosting the 2004 exhibition "Blossoms in the Court: The Artistic Magic and Treasures of Cartier," the Cartier Collection and the Shanghai Museum have collaborated again, writing a new chapter in cultural exchanges between China and the West.
This exhibition, centered around "The Power of Magic," gathers over 300 artistic treasures, organized into six sections. The Cartier Collection treasures are displayed alongside precious artifacts from various global museums, continuing the dialogue between Chinese and Western culture and art. The visual director for this exhibition is cAI™ (pronounced AI Cai), an artificial intelligence model tailored by artist Cai Guoqiang and his team, which completed the design under their guidance.
The overall exhibition display integrates cAI™'s images inspired by Ni Zan's landscape paintings and Chinese line drawings of gardens based on the exhibition's theme. The porcelain and stone sculptures in the display cases are intricately carved by craftsmen from Cai Guoqiang's hometown of Quanzhou, based on cAI™'s creative images. These sculptures blend traditional Chinese culture with contemporary AI dialogue and creativity, echoing Cartier's innovative spirit and magic in jewelry design, which emphasizes natural gemstones and craftsmanship. On the day of the opening ceremony, Gong Li, Cartier's Global Ambassador for High Jewelry, attended and viewed the exhibition.
