Woolmark and Colourizd unveil low-impact dyeing breakthrough for the wool industry
In a major stride toward sustainable innovation in the textile industry, Woolmark has partnered with dry textile coloring pioneer Colourizd™ to introduce a revolutionary dyeing process designed specifically for wool and wool blends. The new technology, QuantumColour, dramatically reduces water usage, chemical inputs, and environmental impact, marking a transformative moment for the wool sector.
QuantumColour redefines yarn coloration by using just 0.5 liters of water per kilogram of yarn, starkly contrasting the 60–120 liters typically required in traditional dyeing processes. Even more notably, it eliminates the need for bleaching, pre-treatment, and wastewater discharge, using only a wetting agent and a Bluesign-certified pigment and binder system to deliver a wide tonal range of colors with superior durability.
Traditional wool dyeing methods typically rely on a cocktail of harmful chemicals such as caustic soda, acids, bleach, and salts, all contributing to water pollution and high resource consumption. QuantumColour circumvents these entirely by injecting pigment directly into the yarn fiber bundle, enabling not only a more sustainable process but also a more supple and vibrant finish.
Already tested successfully on 100% Merino wool as well as blends with cotton, Tencel, and nylon across various yarn counts, the QuantumColour method meets all performance benchmarks for color fastness and durability.
