Textile Exchange Strengthens Assurance Framework for Materials Matter Standard
Textile Exchange has introduced two new policies to strengthen the certification and assurance system that supports its Materials Matter Standard, a unified framework designed to bring greater consistency to material certification across the fashion, textile, and apparel industries. The Materials Matter Criteria for Certification Bodies establishes requirements for third-party certification organisations. At the same time, the Materials Matter Risk and Sampling Criteria and Tools Policy provides methodologies for risk assessment, sampling and audit planning. Together, the policies are intended to help certification bodies assess organisations more consistently, systematically and transparently.
The new measures represent another step in Textile Exchange’s phased transition toward Materials Matter, which consolidates its existing suite of material standards into a single framework covering climate, nature, people and animal considerations. Published on August 6, 2026, both policies will take effect on December 31, 2026, and become mandatory from December 31, 2027, with all audits conducted against the Materials Matter Standard thereafter. During 2026, Textile Exchange is focusing on equipping certification bodies with the necessary resources and guidance, while an additional year of optional uptake will allow early adopters to begin certification and other organisations to prepare for the transition.
