SBTi Unveils Corporate Net-Zero Standard V2.0 to Turn Climate Ambition into Action
The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) has released its Corporate Net-Zero Standard Version 2.0, marking a significant evolution in the global framework for corporate climate action. Designed to help companies move beyond target-setting and toward implementation, the updated Standard introduces a more flexible and practical approach while maintaining the scientific rigor that underpins credible net-zero commitments.
Building on a decade of experience supporting more than 11,000 companies worldwide, the new Standard reflects the realities of business transformation across diverse sectors and geographies. Key updates include a stronger emphasis on implementation and transparent progress reporting, recognition of “best efforts” target achievement, and new mechanisms encouraging companies to address ongoing emissions while prioritizing direct decarbonization across operations and value chains.
According to the SBTi, the revised framework aims to better equip businesses to manage transition risks, strengthen resilience, and enhance long-term competitiveness in a rapidly changing economy. The Standard also introduces a broader suite of target-setting pathways, moving away from a one-size-fits-all model while ensuring alignment with climate science and global net-zero objectives.
The Corporate Net-Zero Standard V2.0 follows an extensive development process involving public consultations, pilot testing, expert working groups, and review by the SBTi’s independent Technical Council. SBTi Chief Executive Officer David Kennedy described the launch as a response to growing demand from companies seeking practical implementation support, emphasizing that the next phase of climate leadership requires turning ambition into measurable action.
