Sportswear giant Puma is set to transform the sportswear industry with the significant expansion of its textile-to-textile recycling initiative, Re:Fibre. Starting from the 2024/25 season, millions of football replica jerseys for major tournaments like Euro and Copa América will be produced using at least 75 percent recycled textile and other waste materials.

This ambitious move follows a successful 2023 pilot where 46,000 jerseys were created using Re:Fibre technology. Puma's strategy aims to reduce reliance on plastic bottles for recycled polyester, a common industry practice. The company is exploring various recycling techniques, including thermo-mechanical and chemical processes, to enhance its capacity for recycling textile waste.

The expansion of this initiative comes at a time when the sportswear market is highly competitive, with sustainability becoming a key differentiator. Puma's investment in Re:Fibre could give it an edge in attracting environmentally conscious consumers.
