Pact and BlockTexx explore recycling solutions for Australia’s fashion industry

Pact Group, a leading plastic recycler and packaging manufacturer, has partnered with BlockTexx, a cutting-edge clean technology company. Together, they aim to develop an end-to-end garment collection and recycling ecosystem designed to divert polyester, cotton, and polycotton-blend clothing from landfills and transform them into reusable raw materials for new products.

Pact brings extensive expertise in fashion supply chain management through its Retail Accessories division, which collects and redistributes used plastic garment hangers from retail stores across Australia and globally. These hangers are sorted, quality-checked, and redistributed to suppliers for reuse, while those unsuitable for reuse are recycled into new hangers, ensuring they remain in the production loop.

BlockTexx, on the other hand, has developed a groundbreaking chemical recycling process specifically for hard-to-recycle polyester and cotton blends. Operating from its Loganholme facility near Brisbane, BlockTexx’s technology enables fibre-to-fibre recycling for new clothing, fibre-to-product manufacturing, and even fibre-to-agriculture applications, promoting resource efficiency and sustainability across the industry.

The urgency of this initiative is underscored by Australia’s alarming textile waste statistics. According to Seamless, the country’s clothing product stewardship scheme, the Australian fashion industry manufactures and imports approximately 1.4 billion items of new clothing annually, most of which are made from non-renewable and environmentally harmful materials. Shockingly, over 200,000 tonnes of clothing end up in landfills each year, highlighting the critical need for innovative recycling solutions.

The collaboration between Pact and BlockTexx represents a significant step toward creating a circular economy in the fashion industry. By leveraging Pact’s supply chain expertise and BlockTexx’s advanced recycling technology, the partnership aims to offer scalable solutions that reduce waste, lower CO2 emissions, and keep textiles out of landfills.
