Freitag launches circular rental service with a personal touch
Swiss sustainable bag brand Freitag has announced the launch of Freitag Rent, a new rental service designed to promote circular consumption and reduce resource use. The initiative debuted on June 25 with the F512 Voyager, Freitag’s largest travel rucksack, available for short-term rentals starting at 24 euros for four days.
The move places Freitag alongside global brands like Decathlon, H&M, and Nike, which have embraced rental models as part of their broader sustainability strategies. “We want to encourage sharing instead of owning,” said Peter Hollenstein, project manager for Freitag Rent. “With this service, we’re exploring a new circular business model and aiming to maximize product usage and longevity.”
Freitag Rent prioritizes function and sustainability. It also adds a unique human touch. Each F512 Voyager includes a small travel diary inside its inner compartment. Renters are invited to stamp the date of their journey, record their name and destination, and leave behind personal travel tips or stories, creating a shared narrative among users.
The service currently focuses on the travel bag category, where Freitag sees infrequent usage patterns that make renting a smart alternative to owning. The rental fee covers maintenance, cleaning, and product handling, ensuring each bag remains in top condition for its next adventure.
Freitag, known for its recycled truck tarp designs, operates 21 flagship stores and is stocked at over 460 retailers across Europe, including the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, and Switzerland. The launch of Freitag Rent marks another step in the brand’s mission to close the loop and inspire more conscious consumer behavior.
