Shein bans fur and exotic animal skins from its marketplace

Chinese fast-fashion retailer Shein has expanded its no-fur policy to include third-party sellers on its marketplace, prohibiting the sale of fur and wild animal skins. The updated policy applies to products made from the skins, feathers, or other parts of animals classified as "exotic," such as crocodiles, alligators, snakes, and ostriches.

The policy revision follows a meeting with People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), during which the organization presented evidence of third-party vendors selling real fur and exotic animal skin products on Shein’s platform. Previously, Shein’s no-fur policy applied only to its in-house brands.

"Every rabbit-fur coat or crocodile-skin purse is made with the suffering of a thinking, feeling being who didn’t want to die," said Tracy Reiman, PETA’s Executive Vice President, in a statement. "Shein made the right decision to ensure that its online store and marketplace are free from fur and wild-animal skins, and PETA urges all other hold-out companies to follow its lead."

By adopting a comprehensive ban, Shein now joins the ranks of major fashion brands and retailers such as Asos, Burberry, Chanel, Macy’s, Nike, and Nordstrom that have eliminated fur and exotic animal skins from their offerings.
