Sephora unveils new eco-friendly labels: Clean at Sephora and Planet Aware at Sephora
During the Change Now international exhibition for ecological transition held at the Grand Palais Éphémère in Paris from March 25 to 27, Sephora made a significant announcement regarding its commitment to sustainability, with the launch of two new eco-responsibility labels: "Clean at Sephora" and "Planet Aware at Sephora".
These labels, set to roll out internationally from April onwards both online and in Sephora stores, aim to provide customers with transparent information about product formulations and environmental commitments of Sephora's partner brands.
The "Clean at Sephora" label identifies brands that exclude certain controversial ingredients like sulfate, mineral oils, or benzophenones from their products. Currently, 133 brands worldwide meet this standard, including popular names like Drunk Elephant, Fenty Skin, and Haus Labs.
On the other hand, "Planet Aware at Sephora" showcases brands dedicated to environmental sustainability. To earn this label, brands must meet a set of 32 criteria focusing on reducing packaging, sourcing sustainable ingredients, and upholding biodiversity and animal welfare standards. Currently, 40 brands distributed by Sephora globally have achieved this recognition.
Notably, 39 brands meet the criteria for both labels, and the rollout of these labels will extend to all Sephora regions by the end of 2024 and in China by 2025. Sephora is facilitating the integration of brands into these standards by providing a self-assessment tool, developed in collaboration with its technology partner Novi Connect. This tool allows partner brands to evaluate their products according to the "Clean at Sephora" list of ingredients and the "Planet Aware at Sephora" criteria.
Building on its prior sustainability efforts, including the introduction of labels like "Good for you" and "Good for a better planet" in 2020, Sephora aims to offer customers enhanced clarity with these new labels, reinforcing its commitment to eco-friendly practices.
