Redress Design Award presents collections of six rising stars at Shanghai Fashion Week
Redress, the Hong Kong-based, Asia-focused environmental NGO accelerating the change to a circular fashion industry is proud to announce a runway show featuring emerging Chinese sustainable fashion designers at Shanghai Fashion Week SS 2025 on 16 October. This event will spotlight their innovative collections from the Redress Design Award, the world's leading sustainable fashion design competition supported by the Cultural and Creative Industries Development Agency of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (CCIDA) as the Lead Sponsor.
With about 80% of a product's environmental impact determined at the design stage, designers hold the key to making fashion more sustainable. This is where the Redress Design Award comes in, offering a crucial platform to educate and empower young designers to prioritize circularity and sustainability in their work.
The headlining designer in the show, Ruyin Tian, exemplifies innovative, circular, and sustainable design. Her collections utilize a variety of materials, including recycled fabrics, end-of-roll, and cut-and-sew textile waste, and incorporate design techniques focused on durability, versatility, and zero-waste pattern cutting. A selection of five other Redress Design Award 2024 designers' waste-reviving collections are also presented, including Xue Wang, Tiger Chung, Yu Zhang, Zheyi Ruan and Violet Ma.
This creative showcase not only celebrates the transformative power of fashion but also underscores the urgentneed for empowering designers with circular and sustainable design education in the industry. Dr. Christina Dean, Founder, and Board Chair of Redress, emphasized the significance of the Chinese fashion market, stating, "Asia is where the majority of the world's clothes are consumed and produced. The fast-growing emerging markets and production bases mean that Asia produces 50% of global GHG emissions. The positive news is that we are seeing action. China has published a nationwide goal to foster a green, low carbon, and circular economic system. Now more than ever, there is an urgent need for collaboration amongst designers, manufacturers, and consumers alike to accelerate circularity in Asia."
This runway show aligns with Redress' mission to educate and empower designers and consumers to reduce clothing's negative environmental impacts. The RedressDesign Award educates emerging fashion designers around the world about sustainable design theories and techniques. It creates a unique platform for passionate and talented fashion game-changers to transform the global fashion industry and maximise long-term impact. Emerging fashion designers stepping into the spotlight are uniquely positioned to drive circular and sustainable practices in the fashion industry, addressing both environmental and economic concerns.
Following the Shanghai Fashion Week runway show, Redress will also be exhibiting a showcase of Redress Design Award 2024 Finalists and select other international alumni designers' sustainable creations. The exhibition is in partnership with The Bicester Collection under their Creative Spot Initiative, a platform that aims to support emerging designers globally, and will run from 24 October to 30 November at Bicester Village Shanghai.
