Hangzhou Asian Games, Asian Para Games go carbon neutral for the first time in Asian Games history

On December 6, during a dedicated event, the Hangzhou Asian Games Organising Committee (HAGOC) proudly announced the unprecedented achievement of carbon neutrality, reinforcing the commitment to deliver a sustainable legacy for the host cities and beyond as the first carbon-neutral Asiad in history.

Following meticulous calculations and certification evaluations, the Hangzhou Asian Games and Asian Para Games collectively emitted 882,900 tons of greenhouse gases. Impressively, they offset this impact by utilizing green electricity to reduce emissions by 22,000 tons and accepting social donations equivalent to 1,099,900 tons of carbon offset credits. This signifies the inaugural achievement of carbon neutrality in the Asian Games and Para Games history, setting a groundbreaking precedent for sustainable event hosting.

Guided by environmentally sound principles since its inception, the Hangzhou Asiad integrates sustainability into every facet of its planning and operations. Meng Xiangsheng, Deputy Director of the Environmental Sustainability Department of HAGOC, emphasized the comprehensive approach encompassing construction, transportation, energy sources, and waste reduction. Green practices, such as powering all venues with renewable energy, utilizing methanol for the main flame, and employing electric vehicles, showcase a commitment to pioneering a new standard for large-scale international events.
