Marks & Spencer Expands Its Sustainability Agenda with New Cotton Initiative

Marks & Spencer (M&S) has unveiled a new collaboration with Pilio aimed at reshaping the environmental footprint of cotton production while strengthening the livelihoods of the farmers who grow it. The ACE cotton programme, developed under the retailer’s long‑running Plan A sustainability strategy, places farming communities at the centre of decision‑making and seeks to scale practices that support both people and nature.

At the heart of the initiative is a dual focus:

  • Clean energy access — The programme will provide financing for both on‑farm and off‑farm solar technologies, helping growers reduce reliance on fossil fuels and cut carbon emissions associated with cotton cultivation.

  • Biodiversity restoration — M&S and Pilio plan to invest in habitat creation, land restoration and nature‑positive interventions, including native plantings designed to support local wildlife and improve ecosystem resilience.

These efforts build on M&S’s existing commitment to responsible cotton sourcing. The company already sources 100 percent of the cotton used in its clothing from what it defines as “more responsible sources,” a milestone it has highlighted as central to its materials strategy.

The launch of ACE signals a broader shift in how major retailers are approaching raw‑material sourcing. Rather than focusing solely on certification or traceability, programmes like this aim to intervene directly at the farm level—supporting growers with technology, financing, and ecological restoration. For a fibre as widely used as cotton, such interventions can have an outsized impact on emissions, water use, and biodiversity outcomes.
