Loro Piana Highlights Sustainable Mongolian Cashmere Commitment at UNCCD COP17
Loro Piana marked four decades of sourcing cashmere from Mongolia at the 17th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD COP17) in Ulaanbaatar, highlighting its ongoing efforts to support more resilient cashmere supply chains. At the centre of its presentation was Resilient Threads, a multi-year initiative launched to protect biodiversity across Mongolia’s Eastern Steppe while supporting the livelihoods of herding communities. Developed around the One Health approach, the programme addresses the interconnected health of people, animals and ecosystems in response to challenges including climate extremes, land degradation and biodiversity loss.
Progress under the initiative includes the establishment of a biodiversity centre, a rehabilitation programme for the Bayandelger red goat and the development of a Dzud Impact Report examining the effects of Mongolia’s severe winter disasters on livestock and herding communities. The programme is also advancing training and healthcare access through initiatives such as a One Health masterclass and a mobile health hub serving remote herders and their animals. Through collaboration between Loro Piana, LVMH, the UNCCD, the Government of Mongolia and other partners, the initiative seeks to translate the One Health framework into practical, locally informed action—linking ecosystem protection with animal welfare, community resilience and the long-term future of Mongolia’s cashmere sector.
