Feng Chen Wang SS23 collection launched at Paris Fashion Week

For the idea of addressing the contradictions that exist within each person, like being gentle but strong, a hopeful cynic — or a menswear designer offering women’s looks, Chinese-born designer Feng Chen Wang, who is based between London and Shanghai, used transparency effects and cutouts as a sartorial metaphor in her first Parisian presentation.

This series included a patch-worked suit made from deadstock; another looked like it had been made from an oversized jacket sliced into pieces and recomposed for a cropped blazer and shorts; a third had vintage leaning, except for the transparent sleeves and tuxedo stripes spliced into it. Wang also presented four looks out of her upcoming collaboration with Canada Goose, their detachable elements made them feel adaptable to various wealth conditions and social occasions.

This collection was conceived while still in China, and although the clothes themselves were uplifting and attractive, the sentiment behind them was more ambiguous. Over the raucous electronica playing in the space, designer Feng Chen Wang said: “The collection is inspired by thoughts of people who are emerging. These are people full of conflicts. Maybe these people are happy or sad, maybe they feel lonely. It is about conflict.”
