Adidas launches green store in Shanghai, unlocking a new sustainable retail experience
In celebration of the 54th World Environment Day on June 5, Adidas unveiled a new sustainable retail concept at its Originals store on Tianlin Road, Shanghai. This initiative marks a significant step in integrating environmental consciousness into everyday retail experiences, aligning with Shanghai’s status as the first Chinese city to implement a “zero-waste city” ordinance.
The store embodies circular design principles across all touchpoints. Fixtures, including shelves, mannequins, checkout counters, and hangers, are made from recycled or repurposed materials, extending their life cycle and minimizing waste. Discarded Adidas apparel has been upcycled into new in-store items such as fitting room curtains, shoe-trying benches, and reusable eco-bags, giving old products a "new profession" and reinforcing the brand’s commitment to reuse.
With this pilot store, Adidas aims to gather scalable insights that can be applied across its broader retail network. By weaving sustainability into both operations and brand storytelling, the company is reducing its environmental footprint and engaging consumers in the journey toward a greener future.
